Unacceptable Behavior

Here's an incident that happened yesterday between 2 men in uniform, an Internal Security Force Officer and a Sukleen Street Sweeper.

The Sukleen employee was doing his job sweeping the dirt and trash into a pile that he can then shovel into his collection bin. The officer who is entrusted with law enforcement was manning a security booth facing the residence of a VIP, or VVIP a la Libanaise. The officer suddenly decided to enforce his boot on the pile of dirt, kicked it around, and ordered the Sukleen employee in a very nice manner to sweep it again; all while sharing a hearty laugh with his subordinate.

My friend who was appalled by what he witnessed intervened telling the officer to consider that he's dealing with a human being. The officer's disgusting, though expected, response to my friend was: "OK, now we know what color you are."

Earning stripes at a record pace....

What more do we expect from Fatfat's (and Saba3's) militias... :S

Seriously though, the condescending attitude towards Sukleen employees (and other foreign workers especially Syrians) is just disgusting.

If Syria would open diplomatic relations with lebanon and not call it "part of greater syria" these syrian guest workers could have more rights.

But aint it true that Lebanon doesnt give working rights to palestinians as well?

how long has that been going on 40 years?

regardless of your hatred for israel, why do not grant equal right to all your people that live within you borders, after all there are no jews left and certainly no israelis..

oh i stand corrected, there are at least 4 israelis living in lebanon under lock and key, if they are alive...

noone knows since the lebanese government will not allow the red cresent to visit these POW's

but back to your great nation...

how you treat the least among you and shows your greatness or you total lake of humanity...

"what is occupation",

Philippines, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, etc. have diplomatic relations with Lebanon, and yet the foreign workers are treated like crap. I fail to see what diplomatic relations has anything to do with this bigoted, racist, hateful treatment.

My neighbours have Sri Lankan and Ethiopian and Filippino "maids", I feel really embarrassed at the way MY NEIGHBOURS treat them. One of them was treated so badly that she had to escape from the balcony at night... :S I've heard the same story from many people whose "maids" fled from the balcony, there's even a place where these beaten-up foreign workers hide in, because the police are always looking for them. The police look for runaway "maids" instead of looking for assasins. Some priorities. :S

oh I just thought about something...
there is one neighboring country... *me looks down*
which has problems with sex workers... they lure them in from east europe, beat them up and lock them up in small rooms
they pass them food, water, and condoms once a day...
just thought, don't throw stones at others if your house is made of glass...

It really is horrible.

The thing is, it's not just the officer class. It's a very large portion of Lebanese who feel it is okay to abuse the people "below" them or of a different race.

Lebanon is not just a sectarian country. It's an incredibly racist and classist country.

After the Danish cartoon clashes, the Interior Ministry picked up "suspects" from around the country. Most of these suspects just happened to be Sudanese, Ethiopian, and Iraqi (did you see any African faces in the pictures of the Consulate roast). Well, they also picked up an American. Most Lebanese security officials fail to remember Americans come in different colors, and the black guy they locked up had a powerful embassy that would not allow abuse of him.

Yes, what a terrible incident.

I guess the Internal Security Forces should go back to doing their real job--namely, blatantly avoiding the investigation of 6 political assassinations and countless explosions in Christian towns all over lebanon while at the same time serving Syria to the very core.

I have a question:Who are the major shareholders of Sukleen Lebanon?
I tried to investigate but the least I could say this company is far from being transparent.

This monday, early in the morning, I was crossing the road, near a VVIP area too, and by me was a lady of Asian origin (ie dark skinned), a car crossed, the driver looked at her angrily, he seemed angry that she crossed instead of waiting for him to pass first, then he made a sudden turn, his door hit her, she fell and he fled. There was a policeman at the crossing but nothing happened, maybe he did not see. Anyway I made sure she was okay. Beirut, Lebanon , 27 Nov 2006.(the year of the tiger?? or of the Cedar Rev?)
