Spot the 10 Mistakes

Long before Sudoku, the entertainment page in the newspaper used to feature a spot the mistakes picture. Let's see how well you can do with spotting blunt discrimination in this ad for MEA which is unequivocally not an equal opportunity employer.

Sadly, despite the blatant chauvinism in this ad, it's not as bad as the reality.

I dated an MEA flight attendant once I met while flying back from Cyprus. She couldn't speak English or French, but she is tall and beautiful. The hiring guy looked at her, asked her if she met all qualifications, then hired her on the spot without checking anything.

1-Marital status: single... so no husband can bug us in case we do something...
2-age: 21- 27... mature enough, young and "fresh" enough.
3-160cm minimum... we want her to be a model.
4-weight proportion to height: not fat women please.
5-smart appearance: she needs only to "look" smart, actual smartness is unnecessary.
6-Clear complexion: we want them looking Caucasian.. no racism at all in here...yeah right!
7-knee length skirt: we want to see your legs.
8-and of course HOSTESS: no males please...
9-medically fit: hot body.
10-ability to swim: we need to check you up in a bikini.

that's not the only thing dude.last year I was coming from paris to beirut and they were running the movie guess who.
if you know that movie, its a white guy who wants to marry a black girl, and she didn't tell her parents that he is white, and the father is always bugging the shit out of him in the movie.
yeah typical racist comedy movie from the US...anyway, that's not the problem. the problem is the lebanese translator was one bad bastard, everytime they said the word black it was translated as "3abed" (for the non-lebs: slave).
nice MEA...

agree with all the above BUT kodder, for your own info, its not MEA who translates the movie.

With all due respect, nobody wants fat flight attendants. Not for viewing pleasure, but should emergency arise, you need a crew of physically fit and able people to take charge.

So how does one get a job as "instructor" for the "two months training period"? :)

solomon you're naughty; for some reason i knew you would be.

rampurple, the MEA may not translate the movies, but they might as well; such a lebanese translation!

one more spotted mistake: the announcement headline automatically excludes people born without wings. it blatantly states:
"opportunity to work as flying hostess."

definitely a sexist ad. but, it's not MEA who are the chauvinists, but the clientele they cater to! and if their frequent flyer first class passengers need eye candy, then they will get eye candy!... what i found (partly)ironic is the "ability to swim" clause! i know it is a necessary skill, just would have never imagined that an airline should advertise it as part of the job requirement!

I wish American Airlines had such firm requirements; it would make all the trips much more enjoyable. I applaud MEA's efforts, despite Jamal's intent with this post. It only makes us (me) want to go visit Lebanon more often :)

Hello, my name is Lydia Sizer and I am working on a thesis through Brown University in the United States looking at blogs. I am looking at how blogs affect mutual understanding among people of different ethnic backgrounds and I was wondering if you would be willing to take a survey I have prepared for my research. This research would give you a voice in determining whether blogs would be useful in aiding global security and counteracting racism. If you are interested, don't hesitate to email me at Lydia_Sizer@brown.edu. Thank you so much for your time. For convenience, please enter "thesis survey" as the subject of your email as I will not know who is writing to me. Thanks again! In addition, you will receive an email later from lscello@aol.com. This is because my school email is routed through my home email. Thanks!

For sometime now i have been reading "what is Occupation"'s comments on Jamal’s articles, and i must admit, i am really fascinated by his exquisite sense of sarcasm, irony and irrelevance to all topics discussed. I sincerely respect the curiosity that drives him to read jamal’s articles, though he does not understand the Lebanese common sense, nor the Lebanese traditions, spoken language or anything else.
So please, everyone, do not give “what is occupation” a hard time, he just needs a space to express his feelings, regardless of the content of the article he is commenting of course.
